The How to Rent Guide was an official government document used before the Renters’ Rights Act changes. It helped tenants and landlords understand rights, responsibilities, tenancy setup, safety requirements, deposits, disputes, and possession-related issues under the previous private rented sector framework.
This document should now be treated as a legacy reference guide only. It may assist landlords, agents and property professionals when reviewing historic tenancy files, older compliance records, or possession records connected to the pre-RRA framework.
It should not be used as the current tenant information document for new post-RRA tenancy arrangements.
For current tenancy onboarding and post-RRA compliance, landlords and agents should use the official Renters’ Rights Act Information Sheet 2026 and retain evidence that the required information has been provided to tenants.
TLA members should also keep clear records of tenant information delivery, tenancy documentation, and supporting compliance actions within the tenancy file.
This guide should only be used for historic reference, including older tenancy files, pre-RRA compliance checks, or where legacy Section 21 records need to be reviewed.
This document is retained for reference only. For live compliance tasks, members should use the current RRA 2026 guidance and supporting TLA compliance tools.
