More than 180 community leaders and representatives gathered at Lancaster House in London on 4 March 2026 for a significant inter-faith iftar event hosted by UK government ministers. The occasion celebrated the contributions of British Muslim communities across economic, social, cultural, and civic spheres, reinforcing the government’s commitment to engagement with faith and diaspora groups.
Government hosts major Ramadan event at Lancaster House
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, alongside the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, organised the joint reception to honour Muslim contributions to British society. Attendees included faith leaders from diverse communities, youth representatives, cultural figures, parliamentarians, and ambassadors, reflecting a broad spectrum of engagement.
The event was hosted by Communities Secretary Steve Reed, Faith and Communities Minister Miatta Fahnbulleh, and Foreign Office Ministers Hamish Falconer and Seema Malhotra. They acknowledged the challenging context for communities due to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, emphasising the importance of unity and reflection during Ramadan.
Speeches highlight unity and shared values
Communities Secretary Steve Reed remarked on the diversity and influence of the UK’s Muslim population, stating, “Today, the United Kingdom is home to one of the most diverse Muslim communities in the world and British Muslims continue to play a huge role in shaping so much of our shared national life.” He emphasised the significance of gatherings like the iftar, which provide moments to pause and reflect on shared values.
Minister for Faith, Devolution and Communities Miatta Fahnbulleh highlighted the importance of grassroots cohesion, saying, “Events like this matter because building cohesion happens on the ground, in our communities, through the relationships we build with faith leaders and organisations.” She described Ramadan as integral to British life and praised the event as a celebration of the vital contributions made by British Muslims nationwide.
Minister for the Middle East Hamish Falconer reflected on the spiritual significance of Ramadan and the difficulties faced by many in the Middle East during this holy month. He described the iftar reception as “an important symbol of hope and peace during troubling times” and an opportunity to unite communities in celebration.
Exhibitions showcase historic Muslim contributions
The event featured exhibitions highlighting the historic role of Muslims in Britain. Notably, British war artist Arabella Dorman’s ‘Great Faith’ portrayed 80 Muslim servicemen and women, from World War veterans to current service members, who have stood for Britain.
Another exhibition, “Pioneers” by the Muslims in Rail network, showcased the contributions of Muslim railway workers in rebuilding Britain’s railways after the Second World War. Additionally, the National Archives presented an exhibit on Noor Inayat Khan, a British spy and the first female wireless operator sent to France during the Second World War to aid the resistance.
Community leadership emphasised
Sajda Shah, awarded an MBE in December 2025 for services to community development, spoke on the importance of leadership and trust. She stated, “Tonight, we were reminded that committed leadership, trust, and strong relationships are our greatest assets. That is the work ahead. And it is work we must put our weight behind with a real sense of purpose, resolve and drive.”
What this means for landlords
For landlords and agents, this event underscores the importance of recognising and respecting the diverse cultural and religious backgrounds of tenants. Understanding community values, such as those celebrated during Ramadan, can foster stronger relationships and promote inclusivity within rental properties. Engagement with local faith and community leaders may also support harmonious neighbourhoods and enhance community cohesion.
