Government Incentivises Landlords to Install EV Chargers

The UK government has reaffirmed its commitment to encouraging landlords to install electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure in rental properties. This follows concerns raised by Labour MPs about the difficulties renters and leaseholders face when seeking to install EV charge points. The government’s approach includes financial grants and regulatory reforms aimed at increasing access to EV charging facilities in the private rented sector.

Addressing Barriers for Renters and Leaseholders

Labour MP Keir Mather highlighted that “renters and leaseholders have barriers to installing EV charging points,” a point acknowledged by the government in response to written parliamentary questions. In October 2025, the government announced plans to consult on removing planning permission requirements for EV chargers, particularly for those without private driveways. This consultation aims to simplify the process and reduce obstacles for tenants and leaseholders wanting to install charging points.

Ongoing Incentives for Charging Infrastructure Installation

In response to Labour MP Juliet Campbell’s question about support for renters whose landlords refuse to install EV chargers, Mr Mather stated: “The government recognises the difficulties that people renting or leasing properties can sometimes face when looking to install charge points.” He added that the government “continues to incentivise renters, leaseholders, and landlords to install charging infrastructure through our domestic charge point grants.” Additionally, since June 2022, new residential developments have been required to include EV charge points in their parking facilities, ensuring future properties are EV-ready.

Government Grants Available to Landlords

Landlords can apply for two key government grants to assist with the costs of installing EV chargers. The Electric Vehicle (EV) Charge Point Grant offers financial support covering either £350 or 75% of the installation cost, whichever is lower, towards the purchase and installation of a single charge point socket.

For larger projects involving multiple charge points, the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Grant (EV Infrastructure Grant) provides funding for the broader building and installation work required. This grant covers 75% of the costs up to a maximum of £30,000, depending on the number of parking spaces involved.

These grants aim to reduce the financial burden on landlords, making it more feasible to upgrade properties with EV charging facilities and meet growing tenant demand.

Landlords should consider the benefits of installing EV chargers, not only to comply with emerging regulations but also to enhance the appeal of their properties to environmentally conscious tenants. The availability of government grants significantly offsets installation costs, making it a financially viable investment.
